Vino de Mezcal — Rare Regional Mezcal — Tasting and Tapas Dinner, April 30th
Mezcal — all spirits made with agave, including tequila – is the only hard alcohol with true terroir, the only spirit where, as with wine, the environment and the variety of agave play as important a role as processing.
But the mezcal industry doesn’t have the commercial infrastructure that the wine industry has. Most mezcal is still made by small family distilleries where even owning a donkey to pull a stone wheel and grind the roasted root of the plant would be a luxurious technology.
Enter Erick Rodriguez (pictured left), the Indiana Jones of the mezcal world. He travels throughout Mexico finding locals-only agave spirits and introducing them to mezcal aficionados. He’s passionate and unequaled in his knowledge of Mexico’s liquor. Recently, he partnered with the premium-mezcal brand Wahaka to bring a selection of these mezcals to the United States.
On Wednesday, April 30th, Mi Mero Mole will have a private tasting of his and Wahaka’s full Vino de Mezcal line. Mi Mero Mole is one of only a handful of restaurants or bars in the United States to carry the whole line. At nearly $300 per bottle, the $75 price of the tasting will barely cover the cost of the booze. But we believe in this project and the effort to cultivate both great agave and a taste for great agave. Erick will also give a presentation, introducing the many varieties of agave and the unique methods each distillery uses and explaining how they combine to make incomparable mezcals. Vino de Mezcal is also a partnership with Fundación Agaves Silvestres, a non-profit organization dedicated to the reforestation of wild agaves in Mexico.
This is a special opportunity for Portlanders and any tequila or mezcal lover should not miss it. Space is limited and spots will be granted on a strict first-come-first-serve basis. So please RSVP right away. We will be providing various Mexican antojitos and bocadillos to eat following the tasting, included in the price.
