4th of July Hours & Specials

Viva Los Estados Unidos!

Wednesday is Independence Day and to celebrate the birth of our country, we’re going to be serving two of its best inventions: New Mexico’s green chile cheeseburger and LA’s pastrami burrito.

The green chile cheeseburger evolved as a Route 66 roadhouse specialty, combining the native Hatch chiles with America’s most iconic drive-thru eat. Three of our favorites from Santa Fe, pictured above, will be our inspirtation. We’ll be using 1/3 lb of ground beef, smothered in a house-roasted green chile sauce, spicy or mild, and aged white cheddar.

The pastrami burrito is a culinary mash-up that could only come from the cultural mash-up that is Los Angeles where drive-ins are the great democratizer, serving burgers, hot dogs, tacos, burritos, tamales, and pastrami to starlets, surfers, cholos, and fressers. Popularized by places like Oki Dog and Pink’s, the “pastrami burrito”, aka the kosher burrito, something Gustavo Arellano (of Ask-a-Mexican fame) describes in his book Taco USA as “an ungodly concoction of a flour tortilla, heaps of pastrami, and cheddar cheese.”  The Oki Dog version – probably the most famous rendition – contains pastrami, two grilled kosher dogs, all beef chili, and cheese wrapped in tortillas.  It’s this version we’ll be serving, either Oki Dog style with the cheese, or true kosher-style without.

We will be open lunch and dinner Wednesday, from noon to 7pm serving a limited menu in addition to the above specials.  Since we have no idea how many of these things we’ll sell or how busy it will be, you can reserve a green chile cheese burger or pastrami burrito by emailing reservations@mmmtacospdx.com before Wednesday.  We will make extra, though, so first come first serve.  Dine-in or take-out. $8.75 each.
